{"id":736,"date":"2018-01-12T21:14:33","date_gmt":"2018-01-13T05:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gw.k6hr.ampr.org:8080\/blog\/?p=736"},"modified":"2023-01-22T17:58:34","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T01:58:34","slug":"friday-1-12-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/k6hr.com\/index.php\/2018\/01\/12\/friday-1-12-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Mode Choke &#8211; Friday  011218"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Common Mode Choke<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_740\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-740\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-740 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/k6hr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC00574-Medium.jpg\" alt=\"Common Mode Choke\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RF Breakout panel and Common Mode Choke in place<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today&#8217;s work included installation of the Common Mode Choke and the following items:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RF Bulkhead Connectors and Panels<\/li>\n<li>PRO 2500 Power Strip<\/li>\n<li>UPS Backup Power<\/li>\n<li>Mounted Common Mode Choke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I decided to add breakout panels for the antenna connections. I want to avoid direct connections to the equipment so that when I have to move the rack I don&#8217;t have to worry about the antenna coax pulling the equipment toward the back of the rack. All but two antennas will connect via the panels. The discone antenna for the scanner, and the spare G5RV will connect directly to their receivers.<\/p>\n<p>I had a few 1U panels with audio connectors on them and decided to repurpose them rather than buy new panels and have to drill them. The only problem was the knockouts were already punched out and the 15\/16&#8243; hole was too big. The SO-239 bulkhead connectors I purchased did not include any washers. I started looking through the local hardware stores and quickly realized none of them had the right size. I also saw an eHam article saying the same thing, no hardware store will have this size. I knew I had to look elsewhere. I had seen pictures of bulkhead connectors with (what I call) ring washers on them, but where can you find these washers? A pretty obscure part to try to find, especially when you don&#8217;t know exactly what its called.<\/p>\n<p>During my research I was very pleased to find a perfect match at American Radio Supply. They call it a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanradiosupply.com\/large-star-washer-for-so-239-uhf-bulkhead-connectors-stainless-steel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Large Star Washer For SO-239 UHF Bulkhead Connectors&#8221;<\/a>. Yep. Gotta love Google! So here I was stuck with these 15\/16&#8243; holes, and BOOM! Look at that! It&#8217;s 1.047&#8243; wide!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-754 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/k6hr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/G518_Star_Washer-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"232\"><\/p>\n<p>Done! Ordered! Arrived today!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_756\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-756\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-756 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/k6hr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC00577-Medium-1.jpg\" alt=\"Common Mode Choke\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-756\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hats Off to American Radio Supply! A Perfect Fit!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I also realized the W1HIS Common Mode Choke had to be secured somehow in order to provide some strain relief. The cable that will connect here is LMR-600, since it is so rigid, I thought it best to secure the choke with the connector for the LMR-600 facing down.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_759\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-759\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-759 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/k6hr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC00571-Medium-1.jpg\" alt=\"W1HIS Common Mode Choke\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I secured the Common Mode Choke to the rack frame using cable ties. Set the barrel facing downward for a conection to an LMR-600 antenna lead.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-758\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-758 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/k6hr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/DSC00570-Medium-1.jpg\" alt=\"Common Mode Choke\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I mounted FIVE SO-239 Bulkhead connectors. Perfect strain relief!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fullcompass.com\/common\/files\/19824-MonsterCablePRO2500UserManual.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monster Power PRO 2500<\/a>&#8221; was installed today. I mounted it just above the desktop level, as it has two courtesy outlets on the front.
